“The group was done in a laid-back and casual way, it felt like a bunch of guys getting together to talk, but Wes had a positive theme, expertise, and tools to use that applied to any issue or problem we might have. We were free to talk and share naturally, when Wes saw an opening for how we could change or look at something more beneficial he would suggest it as well as demonstrate how to put it into action, and by the end, it just felt like a group of friends helping each other. This contrasted strongly with most other mental health resources I had accessed, previous things just felt like box-ticking PowerPoint presentations and the people running them never felt particularly friendly or interested in me. Before I started the group, I was managing as best as I could, I was under a lot of pressure and simply coping. After the first group, I felt good and optimistic when leaving and Wes showed us a breathing exercise to relax in quite a funny way(Buddha belly!). By around the second and third group, I was starting to manage my emotions, Anxiety, and stress better and better. From then onwards I was very aware of and increasingly able to block out negative or stressful thoughts and was much more relaxed day to day, this then allowed me to devote more of my thinking to solving issues I had instead rather than worrying about things I had no power over. It also let me go into an interview mostly blind and get the job! I would have had a much harder time interviewing well if not for the group. I was able to go in confident and relaxed. Now rather than merely coping I am going from strength to strength! A happy surprise is now that I feel much more able to handle anything that comes my way, I no longer have to lie or understate things that I'm dealing with to family and friends. I simply tell them the truth and they see that I am unbothered and handling it, they are less worried about me, I don't have to feel guilty for lying and I feel closer to them as a result. I'm also talking to them more as I have nothing to hide. I would say the main thing I took away from the group is that everything in my mind is within my control, I have the tools to regulate my thoughts and emotions better and weed out the ones that are of no use to me. Wes and the group have helped me lock in a much more positive, energetic and hopeful approach to everyday life.”
